Frequently asked questions
What is the BIA technology - how does it works ?
Bioelectrical Impedance (BI) was developed first for scientific research and is now widely used in hospitals, clinician’s offices and health clubs. It is considered as one of the most accurate methods to track body fat.
You’ve probably heard that it is wiser not to put any electrical device in water : electricity runs easily through liquids. Muscles, blood vessels and bones are body tissues with high water content that conduct electricity easily. On the other hand, body fat is a tissue through which electricity doesn't run easily.
The BI Analyzer thus passes a harmless electrical current through the body. The device determines the amount of electric resistance it experiences from body fat. Based on your overall body density, it then calculates the body fat percentage using a formula that incorporates height, age, frame size, and gender.
Is there any danger to the user ?
The BIA procedure is harmless, as its widespread use has proved consistently. The current used is too low to simulate nerves or cardiac muscle, and is totally unfelt by the user.
Are there any other methods to monitor body fat ?
Several methods exist to measure body fat. While the Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is among the most accurate, the analysis is expensive and requires lying still from 10 to 20 min before completion . The device is usually found in research centers. Skin folds measurements with calipers involve measuring the body thickness at various location, then deriving the body fat from a calculation based on the sum of measurements. Another recognized method named "The Dunk Tank" or Hydro densitometry consists in measuring a person both outside and inside a tank of water, and then deriving the body density and composition from several formulas. If several techniques exist, BI Analyzer are recognized as among the most cost effective and practical for monitoring on a regular basis.
Why should I monitor my body fat percentage ?
Monitoring health isn't only about the amount of body weight : two persons can have the same weight, but one originating from muscles and bones structure, for instance, whereas the other one will have an excess of fat with associated health risks. An accurate assessment of health or fitness needs therefore to distinguish weight that come from fat and weight that come from lean muscle mass.
What are the most common risks of an excess of body fat ?
Excess of fat (obesity) is linked with diabetes and hypertension and is a risk factor for several other conditions (heart disease, sleep disorders, arthritis, stroke, several forms of cancer, etc.). Awareness and monitoring of body fat is recommended for an healthier life.
Are there any risks associated with too little body fat ?
Yes. Both extremes over and underweight are a risk for medical and psychological state. A very low body fat percentage can result in musculoskeletal problems and osteoporosis particularly for women, and can upset their hormonal balance.
When should I use the Athlete mode ?
This mode is to be used if you are a professional athlete or bodybuilder.
What are there best conditions for determining body fat percentage using BIA device ?
We recommend waiting at least 10 min after waking up as the body composition will vary during the night (dehydration); and to avoid measures just after eating or bathing. Measures after an intense exercise; and after a food, caffeine, alcohol or certain medication intake can also be less accurate. The most important is to select a stable time of the day, and to stick to it. Also remember to test with an empty bladder, when normally hydrated, to step on the scale barefoot and to remain as still as possible during the measurement. Once you have decided on a schedule, we recommend monitoring around twice a month, as changes will occur slowly over time and should be tracked as a trend.
Can this BIA device be used by everybody ?
People with pacemakers and other electric implanted devices are advised not to use the Analyzer Scale. There are no known health risks to the user, but there is a high risk of damaging the device, and the measurements will be inaccurate. Accuracy might also be in question for certain categories of people such as children in growth stage, post-menopausal and pregnant women, professional athletes and bodybuilders, persons on dialysis and persons above 70 years old. However, while the accuracy is weakened, the data can still be used to follow trends and evolutions of their body fat.
Can you use the Analyzer Scale if pregnant ?

How should I maintain my Paranello Analyzer Scale ?
You can use a soft dry or damp cloth to clean the unit and/or alcohol to sanitize the foot pads. Avoid abrasive or volatile chemical cleaners; and do not immerge the device in water or any other liquid.
